Van Leuven Stewart (1936-2007)
Van Stewart graduated from Virginia Law School, where he was on the Editorial Board of the Virginia Law Review, a member of the Order of the Coif, the Raven Society, Omicron Delta Kappa and the recipient of the Algernon Sidney Sullivan award, which is awarded each year to a student at the University (graduate or undergraduate) for outstanding character and service. The year after graduating from law school, Van was an Associate in Law at the University of California Law School in Berkeley, where he taught a course in legal writing and analysis.
Van’s many achievements during his long career as an estates and trusts lawyer were recognized in his election to membership in the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (of which he served as State Chairman for Maryland) and in the International Academy of Estate and Trust Law. He was listed in Best Lawyers in America.
Van was active in the community. His community service included terms as President of the Metropolitan Baltimore Association for Mental Health, President of the Maryland Ballet Company, a Board Member of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Magic Me, Roland Park Country School, International Visitors Center and Parks, People Foundation, Inc., the Board of Overseers for the Baltimore School for the Arts, the Professional Advisory Committee of the Baltimore Community Foundation, the Horticulture Society of Maryland, Inc. and the Professional Advisors Council of the Baltimore Community Foundation. Until his death he remained on the Board of the Irvine Nature Center (of which he had served as President).
