A. MacDonough Plant

One of the founding members of the firm, Mac previously headed the Estates and Trusts Department of Semmes, Bowen & Semmes. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (“ACTEC”), and he has spoken, written and taught extensively on trust and estate law. Away from the office, Mac enjoys travel, and is active in environmental and arts causes in the Baltimore area.

Max A. Blumenthal

Max E. Blumenthal

One of the founding members of the firm, Mickey previously was head of the Estates and Trusts Department at Frank, Bernstein, Conaway & Goldman. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (“ACTEC”), has been very active in local and national legal organizations, and has lectured and written extensively in the field of trusts and estates. An avid sailor, Mickey also is active in community and charitable organizations.

Hugh A. Mitchell

Hugh A. Mitchell Jr.

Prior to joining SPB in 1996, Jay practiced trusts and estates law with the firm of Bar & Mitchell, P.A. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (“ACTEC”), is active in local legal organizations, and is an experienced speaker on estates and trust law. A resident of Annapolis, Jay is actively engaged in church and educational causes.

Robert C. Young

When Bob joined SPB in 1996, he brought extensive trusts and estates law experience from his work at other Baltimore firms and M&T Bank. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (“ACTEC”), and currently serves as Chair of its Maryland chapter. Bob also is a trained mediator, and has spoken extensively on trusts and estates related topics. Bob is active in charitable and community activities, and he authors the blog, Reality Bytes.

Charlotte A. Sherman

Charlotte A. Sherman

Before joining SPB in 1997, Charlotte worked in the area of trust and estate administration at M&T Bank. She is active in local and national legal organizations. Charlotte also works extensively in community charitable efforts, including the Beacon Charitable Foundation, the Planned Giving Advisory Committees of Catholic Charities, the Maryland Institute College of Art and the Baltimore Women’s Giving Circle.

Jonathan G. Lasley

Jonathan has been practicing trusts and estates law at SPB for over twenty years, as an Associate and, since 2006, as a member. Prior to joining the firm, Jonathan worked for the Department of Fiscal Services of the Maryland General Assembly, where he staffed the Senate Budget and Taxation Committee, and conducted a study of Maryland’s death tax system. An avid photographer, Jonathan lives near Severna Park, where he also is active in school and community affairs.

Jennifer S. Yeagle

A Baltimore native, Jennifer joined SPB as an Associate in 2005 after serving as a law clerk to the Honorable Peter B. Krauser, now Chief Judge of the Maryland Court of Special Appeals. She is active in both national and local legal organizations as well in the community as a volunteer fund raiser for the Bryn Mawr School, a member of the Baltimore Women’s Giving Circle and a board member of the Cornell Club of Maryland.

David Schabes

David holds an LLM in Taxation from Georgetown University Law Center, where he received the Thomas Bradbury Chetwood, S.J. Prize for attaining the highest academic average in his graduating class.  Prior to joining SPB in 2010, he worked as a tax lawyer in the law firm of Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP and interned for the Honorable L. Paige Marvel of the United States Tax Court. David enjoys playing ball with his children, who tell him that they are very good at sports.

Van Leuven Stewart (1936-2007)

Van Stewart graduated from Vir­ginia Law School, where he was on the Editori­al Board of the Vir­ginia Law Re­view, a member of the Order of the Coif, the Raven Society, Omicron Delta Kap­pa and the re­cipient of the Algernon Sid­ney Sullivan award, which is awarded each year to a stu­dent at the University (graduate or undergraduate) for outstanding char­acter and ser­vice. The year after gradu­ating from law school, Van was an Associate in Law at the Univer­sity of Cal­ifornia Law School in Berkeley, where he taught a course in legal writing and analysis.

Van’s many achieve­ments during his long career as an estates and trusts lawyer were recognized in his election to member­ship in the Ameri­can College of Trust and Estate Counsel (of which he served as State Chair­man for Maryland) and in the Interna­tional Academy of Estate and Trust Law. He was listed in Best Lawyers in America.

Van was active in the community. His community service included terms as President of the Metropolitan Balti­more Association for Mental Health, President of the Maryland Ballet Company, a Board Member of the Baltimore Sym­phony Orchestra, Magic Me, Roland Park Country School, International Visitors Center and Parks, Peo­ple Foundation, Inc., the Board of Overseers for the Baltimore School for the Arts, the Pro­fes­sional Advisory Commit­tee of the Baltimore Commu­ni­ty Foundation, the Horticulture Society of Maryland, Inc. and the Professional Advisors Council of the Baltimore Community Foundation. Until his death he remained on the Board of the Irvine Nature Center (of which he had served as President).
